general pattern tips
1. selecting your pattern
Select a pattern that meets your skill level. The patterns provided
here are excellent examples for newcomers to the art of relief and chip
carving.
2. enlarge your pattern
After you have selected your pattern, the next step will be to size the
pattern to fit the carving material. Use a photocopier, overhead projector
or other means to reduce or increase the size of the image you want to
carve.
3. position you pattern on your wood
For chip and relief carving, position your pattern on your material,
centering it and ensuring that there is plenty of working room around it.
Use masking or scotch tape, attach your pattern to the wood in position
you have selected.
4. transfer the image from paper to wood
When your pattern is attached to your carving material, place a sheet
of carbon or graphite paper under your pattern with the carbon side facing
the wood. Then using a pencil, trace the pattern onto the
wood. Carefully lift the pattern and carbon paper once in a while to
ensure all your tracing is successfully being transferring to the wood.
Relief carvings do not need all the detail transferred as you will end up
carving most of it away.
5. you are ready to begin your carving, have fun and carve safely.
